Paunović joined the action as a second half substitute in this match as Atletico ground out a 1-1 draw against the reigning champions. Esnaider opened the scoring after just 8 minutes for the La Liga holders but Patrick Kluivert hit an equaliser in the second half and the game ended 1-1. Unfortunately Atleti lost out in extra-time in the 2nd leg which was a thriller. This was Paunović's breakthrough season after arriving in Spain with Marbella the previous year. The up and coming forward made 20 appearances in all competitions in 96-97 and this one the only team he featured in the Champions League in this campaign
